Why an “Abbey”?

The word “abbey” might sound ancient, but that’s exactly why we chose it.

For centuries, abbeys welcomed travelers, cared for their communities, cultivated learning, practiced prayer, and offered places of refuge and rest.

We believe those rhythms are needed now more than ever. Driftless Abbey isn't trying to recreate the past. We're recovering timeless rhythms of hospitality, prayer, learning, and community for college students and the Driftless Region today.

Our vision is to be a modern-day abbey: a sacred, welcoming refuge where students, neighbors, and ministries encounter Christ, engage in rhythms of prayer, worship, and community, and are renewed to serve campus and city.

Our Core Values

CORE VALUES

  1. Hospitality
We deeply value hospitality, showing acceptance and care to anyone that walks through the doors. (Hebrews 13:2, 1 Peter 4:9, Romans 12:13).

  2. Prayer
We believe prayer is the first work; something to return to again and again both individually and with people.
    (Colossians 4:2, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Romans 12:12).

  3. Formation
We seek to be shaped through rhythms, practices, learning, and community.
    (Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18, Colossians 1:28).
